pattern artist and designer
Produced as part of an AA2A residency in the print department of the University of Central Lancashire, this site-specific piece consists of 88 screen-printed pieces that are combined to fill a stretch of corridor. The piece was created in a week, including initial research, final installation and everything in between.
It is based on digital photos of the detail in the corridor itself, which consists of exposed pipework ceilings and painted breezeblocks. Sections of these architectural details were used to create pattern modules, which were then screen-printed onto 12-inch paper squares.
The work encourages viewers to notice the details in their surroundings, particularly by looking up at the ceiling, and consider the often-accidental patterns created by the less aesthetic, functional elements of a building.
